Hyung Jun Yum first created 'Monkey King' in 2002 in plaster with its textured surface painted black, white and red. Later that year the imposing figure was cast in bronze and the patina chosen to mimic the colors of the original. The subject of this sculpture is based upon a sixteenth-century Chinese folk tale by Wu Cheng-en. The story chronicles the Monkey, born from stone, who later becomes a master of Taoist mysticism with skills to match the powers that rule in heaven.
