"The bronze 'Aluna' on view at GFS was cast from a wood original. The sensuality and imperfection of the wood can be sensed even in bronze while its dark brooding surface seems to draw in the light and nature around it like a cauldron. The term “Aluna” comes from the Kogi, the last pre-Columbian tribe who dwell in the Sierra Nevada of South America. Aluna is central to their view of the world, an all-enveloping female principle which like water permeates nature--our own and all that surrounds us. To be always mindful of Aluna, the Kogi carry poporo, wooden vessels into which they dip a stick and rub lime on the lip throughout the day.
The sculpture Aluna was the central form from a series of large outdoor wooden vessels, painted in lustrous colors and exhibited at Wave Hill in 1993. Aluna was the first of my works to be preserved in bronze, a casting for which I am grateful to the Johnson Atelier and Grounds For Sculpture."- Robert Ressler
