Petersen’s sculpture, 'Beast', was originally seen in Grounds For Sculpture's Fall/Winter 2003/04 Exhibition, 'New Jersey State FairGROUNDS FOR SCULPTURE: Amazing Animal Exposition'. Although horses had appeared in paintings by the artist, Petersen only began sculpting horses when asked to do so for a commission. Since then, these equine animals have captured her imagination as she renders them in the sensual, purified form that is distinctive about her work.
“I found that abstracting a horse is a real challenge, because they are so beautiful simply as they are.” ‘Beast’ looms large and powerful above the viewer, his chest broad and strong, his legs spread wide and firmly planted into the ground. His head, however, looks up and out, seemingly into time and space through enigmatic, almond eyes.
